  • What happens after the initial fundraising?
Following the initial round of fundraising, the plan is to ask community members to sustain The Recorder via annual tax-deductible donations — much as they would support other essential non-profits in the community, such as the volunteer ambulance, libraries and fire departments. The expectation is that residents will view having a robust, reliable and independent outlet for local news and information as an essential part of local life and equally important as other institutions and non-profits to ensure the community’s ongoing vitality and health. There will also be a dedicated outreach efforts to advertisers and sponsors, along with grants, to support the organization.
  • Why not just buy The Record-Review?
The Record-Review publisher has been unsuccessfully looking for a buyer for many months. We believe that a purchase doesn’t make economic sense. Why will this effort be successful when the previous one wasn’t? We plan to do several things differently. For example, by setting up as a nonprofit, the organization will be positioned to receive tax-deductible individual donations as well as grants from local journalism foundations. We also plan to extensively market the business to maximize revenue, using automated promotion and communication tools.
  • Will The Recorder apply for grants?
Yes. We are planning to apply for relevant grants as soon as practical. Grant applications will be the responsibility of volunteer or paid staff, depending on what capacity is available. Is there any research available on the current state of local journalism? Yes, there is an excellent source of information through The American Journalism Project. They have tremendous resources on their website: https://www.theajp.org/
  • When will The Recorder start publishing?
We are thrilled to be providing news through the website now and we will begin publishing The Recorder in print in September -- with the inaugural issue expected on September 13th. We are counting on the interest and generosity of our member subscribers, donors, and sponsoring advertisers to eliminate the need for a paywall and to keep The Recorder online free of charge to our communities. For the printed paper, we will send the first four issues of The Recorder for FREE throughout our readership area and, beginning on October 11th, we will mail the printed newspaper only to our Subscribing Members, Subscribing Supporters and Subscribing Patrons. Information about becoming a subscriber to The Recorder is available here.
  • How much will it cost to receive the print edition of The Recorder?
Details about the subscription to The Recorder are available here.
  • Will there be advertising in The Recorder?
Yes! We are counting on the mutually-beneficial support of our community businesses, services and organizations. We are currently accepting commitments for both digital and print display advertising. We are excited to present advertising opportunities to reach target markets with special print publications and special content pages. We will also offer a variety of attractive sponsorship packages. To inquire about advertising or sponsorships, please send an email to advertising@therecorder.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
