Fatal accident on I-684
A 54-year-old Brewster man was killed in a crash early Tuesday on Interstate 684 in Bedford.
New York State Police said Howard I. Zaibel was operating a 2021 Kia Sportage southbound on the highway when, for unknown reasons, he struck a 1995 International Harvester tractor-trailer that was parked south of the Bedford rest area. The crash occurred about 5:15 a.m.
Zaible was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Bad trip
Thursday, Nov. 7, at 4:08 p.m., two males, both 22, were taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps from a home in Katonah after ingesting psychedelic mushrooms and having “a bad trip.” One male is from Katonah, the other from New York City. They told police they’d taken the hallucinogens and wanted to go to the hospital.
Monday, Nov. 4
8:49 a.m. — A woman reported to police a message she saw posted on social media from an acquaintance indicating she might self-harm. The reporting party said she was no longer close with this individual and wasn’t sure where she lived; a third party was contacted who had better information. It was soon confirmed by a nurse at Stamford Hospital that the concerning party was at the hospital and receiving care.
10:38 a.m. — A resident of Katonah, female, 74, was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps for a leg injury. She told police she’d broken her leg two months earlier and after tripping and falling that morning in her home, she felt that the leg was reinjured.
1:56 p.m. — Police went to the Fox Lane High School to meet with a female student and school officials after the student reported receiving harassing and threatening messages on her Instagram account from an unknown party. The school official said this was not the first time this student has been harassed and previously another student thought to be the author of these messages was spoken to and then the messages stopped. Police advised the reporting party to block all messages from senders she doesn’t recognize. A report was made for documentation.
8:19 p.m. — A Fox Lane Middle School student and his mom reported his cellphone was missing from school property. He told police the cellphone was inside his sweatshirt which he briefly removed. The cellphone was locked and no information would be able to be obtained. His brother later used an app that located the cellphone at an address in Patterson; state police went to that address and spoke with a man who said he had the cellphone and was a school custodian. He said he found it and brought it home because he was unsure what to do with it. New York State police took the phone and brought it to Bedford Police where it was returned to the owner. School authorities were contacted and said they would be speaking with the custodian.
Tuesday, Nov. 5
11:11 a.m. — A resident of Wood Road, Bedford Hills, wished to document issues concerning her car which is parked, unregistered, on her property. She told police she believed someone had entered the car and tampered with it. Police said nothing was missing and told the caller to call again if she sees someone on her property.
12:51 p.m. — Police went to Fox Lane Middle School after school authorities reported an unknown student wrote threatening words on a men’s bathroom wall, with the threat to be executed on a specific date. The assistant principal reviewed camera footage of students entering and exiting that bathroom and those students were interviewed without results. Extra police presence was provided on the specific date. Nothing unusual occurred on that day. A report of the incident was made for documentation.
4:00 p.m. — A resident of McLain Street, Bedford HIlls, reported seeing a man in “full camo” in the area. Police found a legally parked vehicle, which was unoccupied, but nothing further.
5:56 p.m. — Gunshots were reported by a resident of Springhurst Road, Bedford Hills. Police canvassing the area saw the same unoccupied car that had been reported earlier, but heard no gunshots.
Wednesday, Nov. 6
5:58 p.m. — Bedford Police assisted Westchester County Police with traffic mitigation at the scene of a motorcycle collision with reported injuries on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
8:13 p.m. — An unruly patron was reported at the CVS pharmacy on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills. Police say an older man was reported yelling at two employees about a phone he wished to purchase. Police said he wasn’t making sense. He refused to identify himself and rode away on a bicycle.
4:24 p.m. — A Bedford father reported to police his young daughter who was wearing a political hat was yelled at by an elderly man while she was walking on Old Post Road, Bedford. Neither father nor daughter recognized the man. A report was made for documentation.
1:59 p.m. — A resident of Hickory Lane reported his political sign was removed overnight from the end of his driveway. He doesn’t have surveillance cameras in that area. A report was made for documentation.
Thursday, Nov. 7
4:00 a.m. — A resident of Captain Theale Road, Bedford, reported his wife left the house in a gray Mercedes-Benz. He said she has early-stage dementia and was reporting her as missing. He provided the car’s license plate number and had an idea where she might have gone. Using a license plate reader device, police located her car and drove to Mount Kisco where she seemed confused but able to drive home. They followed her back to her residence and left her in the care of her husband.
Friday, Nov. 8
1:12 p.m. — Screaming was reported by a caller on Parkway, Katonah, behind Pizza Station. Police found the screamer, female, at the rear of Peppino’s restaurant, half a block away. She told them she was screaming to vent her frustration. She said she would stop and left the area.
11:20 p.m. — Katonah firefighters and Bedford Police responded to a fast-spreading brush fire on Cantitoe Street, Katonah, caused by a downed electrical line. Firefighters set up a perimeter and waited for NYSEG to arrive.
11:22 p.m. — Bedford firefighters and police responded to a report of flames spreading towards a home on Greenwich Road, Bedford, from a brush fire caused by burning wires from downed power lines. Police went to the home to evacuate the residents while Bedford firefighters set up a perimeter and waited for NYSEG to arrive.
Saturday, Nov. 9
7:38 p.m. — A suspicious man was reported by residents of Guard Hill Road, Bedford. Police say it was an Amazon driver leaving a package.
9:52 p.m. — Police assisted Yorktown Police and New York State Police after multiple people were slain in an apartment complex on East Main Street, Jefferson Valley. The suspect was said to be at large and possibly traveling through the Bedford/Katonah area. He was later found in the Bronx after taking his own life. Police say the murder-suicide is connected to a domestic situation.
Sunday, Nov. 10
4:08 a.m. — Police responded to a 911 call from a gas station on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills. On arrival, they found people arguing. The fight appears to have started in a bar in Mount Kisco and continued into Bedford Hills. Due to a language barrier and all parties being in a high level of intoxication, police were unable to determine the nature of the argument. All parties left the area in taxi cabs and no further action was taken.
7:52 a.m. — A caller on High Street, Bedford Hills, called police to say an unknown woman got out of a black pickup truck that pulled up in front of her house and left a Ouija board on her porch. The caller said she has no idea who the woman is or why she left the game. A report was made for documentation.
12:15 p.m. — A car wash on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, complained that bits of styrofoam were blowing onto the newly washed cars from a nearby car dealership. Police went to the dealership and saw styrofoam siding around a fence was indeed blowing onto the car wash property. The dealership management was advised of the complaint. Police said this is a civil matter.
5:00 p.m. — A good citizen who found a roll of cash at the self-checkout at the CVS in Bedford Hills turned the money over to a store manager. The manager reviewed video surveillance and recognized which customer dropped the cash but not how to identify them. Police took the money and vouchered it into safe keeping.
7:36 p.m. — Police assisted North Castle Police searching the area for a suspect at an interrupted burglary in progress at a home on Greenwich Road. The search was unsuccessful and no further details regarding the burglary were available.
