Bedford Police Report Oct. 7-13

Nipped by a flying squirrel 

Monday, Oct. 7, at 11:56 p.m., a person in Katonah reported they’d been bitten by a flying squirrel they were attempting to put into a cage to bring to a wildlife rehabilitator in South Salem. They didn’t want help with the squirrel or medical assistance, only directions to the rehab person as their phone battery was dead and they had no other means of navigation. Directions were provided and no further assistance was requested. 


Cyclist and car collide 

Thursday, Oct. 3, at approximately 5 p.m., a resident of  Stamford, Conn., female, 35, was struck by a car in the area of Pound Ridge and Middle Patent roads, Bedford, while cycling. On arrival, police spoke with the cyclist who was conscious and alert. She complained of pain in her hip and right leg. They spoke with the driver who said he was stopped at the stop sign and attempting to make a left turn onto Pound Ridge Road when a large van heading east on Pound Ridge Road slowed to prepare to turn onto Middle Patent Road. The operator said he inched forward to prepare to make the turn when the bicycle appeared at the front left side of his vehicle. The cyclist stated she was on the shoulder of the road and he didn’t see her and was pulling out as she was going downhill. She was unable to stop, causing the collision. She was transported to Stamford Hospital for further evaluation. A friend of the cyclist arrived and took her bicycle for safekeeping.  

 

Monday, Oct. 7 

8:43 p.m. — A behavioral health client was reported running away from her counselor outside the CVS pharmacy on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills. The counselor told police they’d just come from a hospital visit when the woman experienced a mental health episode in the car and exited the vehicle; the counselor called 911. Police found the woman soon after. She indicated she wished to return to a specific hospital and EMS was requested to evaluate her for treatment. Meanwhile her counselor was able to connect with the woman’s personal physician who spoke with her and calmed her down. She agreed to return with the counselor back to the group residence. 

10:19 p.m. — A bystander waved down an officer on patrol to report a car driving into a rock wall in the vicinity of Bedford Center and Springhurst roads. On police arrival, the car had left. The car and operator were located soon after near Succabone Road. Police say the front end was heavily damaged. They spoke with the operator who said they were going home and missed the stop sign, causing them to crash. They declined medical attention. There was no damage to the rock wall. 

Tuesday, Oct. 8

2:09 p.m. — A landscaping company on Old Post Road, Bedford, reported their computer was hacked, only realizing it after some confusion regarding a payment via wire transfer. It was determined one of their vendor’s payment systems had also been hacked. All banks involved were notified and a report was made for documentation only.  

Wednesday, Oct. 9

12:54 p.m. — Police responded to a residence in Bedford Hills for a welfare check after a mother reported her children hadn’t gone to school that day while in the care of her ex-husband. Police found the children at their father’s home being watched by their grandmother, who said her son overslept and failed to get the children to school. The father was not on scene when police were there. His mother said he was out running errands. The children were fine but missed school that day. No further action was taken.  

3:01 p.m. — Police went to a restaurant on Adams Street, Bedford Hills, after a caller reported a man with a knife. On their arrival, police saw a man with garden clippers which he put down when asked. He said he was there to remove a soda dispensing unit due to problems with the restaurant owner. Earlier that day he said one of his employees had an altercation with the restaurant owner over a parking spot. He said the restaurant owner used a racial slur that was very offensive. Witnesses said no threats were made. The man completed his business of removing the soda unit and no further action was taken. 

3:12 p.m. — A collision with injuries was reported on South Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, when one driver said he was slowing for traffic when his assisted brake system engaged, the car came to a sudden complete stop, and he was rear-ended by the car behind him. Police say no one was injured and neither car was towed.  

Thursday, Oct. 10

12:40 p.m. —  A resident of Bedford came to headquarters to request documentation be made that he gave his car keys and registration and presumably the car to someone in lieu of cash payment for work completed. He said he wanted a simple record that the car was no longer his. Documentation was provided and no further help requested.  

4:01 p.m. — A resident of Woodland Road, Bedford Hills, reported an unknown party left trash on his car. He said someone left a napkin on the driver’s side door handle. It was unclear if the napkin was fresh or used. Police checked the area and saw nothing out of order. He was told to call back if there are further odd incidents. 

11:15 p.m. — A resident of Davids Hill Road, Bedford Hills, reported a strange noise coming from outside her house. Police said the sound was coming from her furnace.    

Friday, Oct. 11

9:41 a.m. — A resident of Susan Place, Katonah, told police he was late meeting his wife at an agreed upon public location to make an exchange of their children as per their custody agreement when his wife showed up at his home. He felt she was behaving in an unsafe manner. The children were exchanged and the man was advised to contact family court. 

5:08 p.m. — A resident of Bedford Hills reported she continues to receive unwanted correspondence from an old boyfriend whose text messages she’s already blocked. She told police she changed her phone number but now he writes her letters. She said the letters are not threatening but unnerving. Police contacted the man and told him in no uncertain terms to cease all contact. A New York state domestic incident report was completed and the woman said she will be seeking an order of protection. 

8:33 p.m. — Police went to a home on Bulls Head Road, Bedford Hills, where they spoke with outgoing tenants. The wife called the police for no discernable reason citing a problem with the landlord. The landlord said he had no issues and had been assured by the husband the couple would be out of the house by the weekend. 

9:06 p.m. — A Fox Lane High School student reported he’d left his backpack that day in the gym locker room and when he returned to it, saw his phone was stolen. Not long after he realized his debit card was missing along with his wallet. His parents began receiving texts that the card was used to make unauthorized purchases. The school resource officer was contacted and police detectives are investigating. 

Saturday, Oct. 12

8:08 a.m. — A resident of Bedford Road, Katonah, reported political signs were removed from their property. They said a total of six signs were taken. Another resident up the street also reported their political signs were removed. A report was made and the homeowners are reviewing their surveillance video to help identify the culprits.  

1:55 p.m. — A driver traveling on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, reported they’d been rear-ended by the car traveling behind them while stopped in traffic. Police say no one was injured and neither car was towed.  

2:27 p.m. — A driver reported she struck a parked car while backing out of a parking space in Bedford Village in front of the Bedford Playhouse. The owner of the parked car corroborated what happened. Police say no one was injured and neither car was towed.  

Sunday, Oct. 13

12:05 p.m. — A woman reported she was walking on Wildwood Road, Katonah, when a dog slipped its lead and got loose, lunging at her. She said she was bitten on her left leg. She confirmed with the dog’s owner the dog was up to date on its vaccinations. An animal bite form was sent to the county health department and the dog control officer notified. 

6:28 p.m. — A male, 85, was reported deceased at his home on The Narrows, Bedford, after his wife called 911 to report him unresponsive. Police and medics were met at the door by his wife and CPR was administered until a medic pronounced him dead. Arrangements were made with a New York City funeral home and police assistance was no longer needed.  

7:14 p.m. — A homeowner on Lily Pond Lane, Katonah, reported political signs she placed at the intersection of Huntville Road and Cherry Street were removed. Police advised that she keep signs on her own property.

Lewisboro Garden Club offering ‘Holiday Swag’

The Lewisboro Garden Club is having a “Holiday Swag” fundraiser for the club. to order swags, go to lewisborogardenclub.org and click on the “Holiday Swags” button for the form.

The swags can be hung on a door or mailbox. They also make great holiday gifts for neighbors, a senior, or for yourself.

“Spread holiday cheer and community spirit,” the club suggests. Orders are due Nov. 24. Swags will be delivered by Sunday, Dec. 8. There is a $36, non-refundable fee for each swag.


Student collection aids four nonprofits

A Fox Lane High School student will be collecting items to help four different charities on the front lawn of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, 44 Village Green, from 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 5, Election Day.

The effort, dubbed “We Elect to Collect,” seeks leftover candy from Halloween, crayons (used, whole or broken) tabs pulled off of aluminum cans and towels (used cloth or new paper).

The effort will support Operation Shoebox, The Crayon Initiative, Pull Together and the SPCA of Westchester.


Pound Ridge Massacre documentary screening, discussion set

The Crestwood Historical Society and Yonkers Historical Society will screen a documentary about the Pound Ridge Massacre at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at the Pincus Auditorium, Yonkers Public Library Grinton I. Will Branch, 1500 Central Park Ave., Yonkers.
