Man nabbed after attempted ATM break-in, another at large

A Hyde Park man was arrested Thursday, Sept. 19, and charged with attempted grand larceny, criminal mischief and conspiracy after an observant Bedford resident reported two people attempting to break into the ATM at the Village Service Center on Pound Ridge Road, Bedford Village.

The witness called 911 and police immediately responded. Bedford Police said they saw one man in the woods at the rear of the property and quickly caught him.

A second man ran into the woods and was not caught.

Westchester County Police were called for assistance, as well as a K-9 officer from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Too drunk to drive

A Putnam Valley man, 24, was arrested on Cantitoe Street, Sept. 22, at 12:49 a.m., charged with driving while intoxicated. Police saw his car stopped in the roadway and pulled up behind him, activating emergency lights. The operator said he was in his boss’ van returning from Mount Kisco. Police say there was a strong odor of alcohol about him and his eyelids were droopy; he appeared intoxicated. He admitted to drinking liquor and beer and said he’d stopped the car when he realized he was too drunk to drive. There was a language barrier and a Spanish-speaking officer was requested. Field sobriety tests were administered, which the man failed, and he was transported to headquarters for processing. At the station it was learned his driver’s license was suspended. He was issued multiple summonses and police attempted to get him a ride home without success. Due to his level of intoxication, he was eventually taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Westchester EMS. The van was impounded.

The thief had left his Connecticut driver’s license in his own car and police used it to identify him. They learned the man returned to the parking lot and he was searched for again, this time with a county K-9 officer, again without result. At 11 p.m., police heard from a caller on Stone Hill Road reporting their Landrover was stolen from their driveway. The car was later found abandoned in Pound Ridge.
