It was a long ride home, but a fun one for the John Jay girls lacrosse team.
John Jay traveled upstate north of Albany to take on Shenendehowa, and the Wolves made the most of the trip, bouncing back after a season-opening loss to Nyack with a dominant 13-4 victory.
After the loss to Nyack at home on Friday, it was up to John Jay to regroup and respond two days later, and the Wolves stepped it up led by senior captains Jane Brennan, Jordan Kauftheil, and All-American Jojo Degl.
“The bus ride back was fun with lots of singing and snacks,” admitted John Jay coach Jessica McDonough. “It was a great game for us with six different scorers. It was great to see the team respond after our first loss, and I was so proud of the leadership shown by Jojo, Jane and Jordan.”
Amelia Inglis had a five-point game to lead the Wolves with two goals and three assists. Finja Degl led the Wolves in goals scored with four, while Jojo Degl had three goals and an assist. Coco Inglis scored two goals, while Micayla DeVeau and Caitlin Brennan each had a goal and an assist for the Wolves.
Molly Gallagher was credited with five saves in goal, and Julia Shepard came on to record one save in goal for the victory.
Best of all for McDonough was to see how the team responded as a unit, everyone involved for an impressive win against a traditional powerhouse from upstate.
“Jordan and Jane did a fabulous job leading the defense, they were locked in,” added McDonough. “Jojo and Fin were quick and efficient in the midfield and on circle play. Offensively, they played as a unit looking for that one more pass, lots of assists. Amelia had a five-point game.”
It was a good bounce back victory for the Wolves after the result in the season opener at home against Nyack. John Jay knew it would be a battle against a Nyack team that advanced to the finals last year and defeated the Wolves during the season.
Both teams have a lot of veteran starters returning from last year and are among the teams hoping to battle for a Section 1 title in a very competitive Class C. However, Friday belonged to Nyack as the Riverhawks came out strong and opened up a 3-0 lead and never trailed, closing out a 15-8 victory over the Wolves.
Nyack held a 3-0 lead in the first quarter until the final minute when Jojo Degl scored to get the Wolves on the board. Any thoughts of a John Jay rally were squashed in a hurry as Nyack started the second quarter with two more goals for a 5-1 lead. Once again the Wolves got a spark from another goal by Jojo Degl to make it 5-2, but once again the Riverhawks answered right back, reeling off four-straight goals for a 9-2 lead.
Jordan Kauftheil stopped the run as she drilled a shot that hit the bar, and she grabbed the rebound and buried it for a goal to make it 9-3. Nyack responded again with five-straight goals for a 14-3 lead before Jojo Degl scored her third goal of the game to make it 14-4.
Finja Degl scored off an assist from Jordan Kauftheil to start the fourth quarter, and Finja scored again off an assist from Coco Inglis to make it 15-6. Jordan Kauftheil scored her second goal of the game, and DeVeau scored her first varsity goal as the Wolves kept battling, but Nyack closed out the 15-8 victory.
“Nyack is so talented, they work well together, they’re amazing players on and off the field,” McDonough said of the Riverhawks. “There are a lot of great teams in Class C and we’re focusing on what we can do. We are measuring ourselves and figuring out what areas we need to tighten up. Today was a good baseline for us to see what we have to fix, but they never got down, never stopped playing the whole game and as a coach that’s what you look for. This is the first game of the season, first game with the new shot clock, and a great starting point.”
John Jay was set for another tough road trip heading out to Long Island to face Manhasset on Saturday, April 5.
