Bedford Police offer active shooter course

The Bedford Police Department will offer a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events training course Wednesday, April 2, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Bedford Police headquarters, located at 307 Bedford Road, Bedford Hills.

The course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny Defend strategy developed by Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training in 2004, provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. 

Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, medical issues and considerations for conducting drills.

Amphibian night hikes at Westmoreland

Westmoreland Sanctuary will hold night hikes to view amphibians Fridays, April 4 and 11, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The hikes, which are suitable for those 5 and up, will be led by Westmoreland naturalists as they search for amphibians awakening from their winter slumber. The sanctuary called them an “exciting nighttime adventure into the world of amphibians.”

Pound Ridge Police Report March 18-23

Tuesday, March 18

5:50 a.m. — A male, age and condition unknown, was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps. 

6:20 a.m. — A female, age and condition unknown, was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps. 

6:00 a.m. — Another female, age and condition unknown, was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps. 

6:00 a.m. — A caller reported a tree down and blocking the roadway on South Bedford Road. Police observed the fallen tree and notified the highway department. Flares were distributed along the roadway to guide traffic. 

9:10 p.m. — A radar detail on Salem Road resulted in one driver receiving a summons for failure to obey a traffic signal. 

10:10 p.m. — A resident of Old Mill River Road reported unknown parties using ATVs on their private property. Police looked for the ATV riders with negative results.  


Wednesday, March 19

11:08 a.m. — Wires were reported down on Cross Pond Road. Police saw the long hanging wires and removed a length of cable where it was lying in someone’s driveway. The cable company was notified.  

5:00 p.m. — Police responded to a female who said she wanted an ambulance to take her to a hospital. When help arrived, she changed her mind and refused transport. 


Thursday, March 20 

10:59 a.m. — Four traffic summonses were issued to drivers traveling on Westchester Avenue: two were for failure to obey a traffic signal; one was for a missing license plate; and a fourth summons was issued for speeding.  


Friday, March 21

11:45 a.m. — A caller on Highview Road reported trees down. Police notified the utility. 

12:45 p.m. — Wires were reported down and in the roadway on Salem Road.  Police notified the utility. 


Saturday, March 22

6:00 a.m. — A male, age and condition unknown, refused medical attention after requesting it. No transport was required. 

5:50 p.m. — During a radar detail on Fox Hill Road no violations were observed. 

7:23 p.m. — A man walking on High Ridge Road who was reported as suspicious told police there was no problem and continued walking.  

8:08 p.m. — Police declared the road blocked on West Lane after a tree came down, obstructing traffic. The road was closed, the utility notified and the highway department summoned to remove the tree. 

8:30 p.m. — A tree that came down and blocked traffic on Lower Trinity Pass Road was determined to actually be in Connecticut. Stamford Police were contacted. 

8:55 p.m. — Upper Shad Road was blocked to traffic by police after a tree came down. The highway department was notified to remove the tree. 

10:00 p.m. — A radar detail on Westchester Avenue resulted in two summonses issued to drivers: one for speeding and one for failure to yield. 

11:00 p.m. — A female, age and condition unknown, was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Pound Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Corps. 


Sunday, March 23 

3:10 a.m. — A traffic summons was issued to a driver on Westchester Avenue for failing to stop for a stop sign.  

9:03 a.m. — A dog found on Ebenezer Lane was returned to its owner without incident.
