The Vista Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Pizza Night and Open House on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the firehouse, located at 377 Smith Ridge Road, South Salem.

Organizers said the family-friendly community event is a chance to support local first responders “and learn how you can make a difference in the lives of others.”

The event will include firetruck rides on Engine 141, firefighting demonstrations, firetruck tours with firefighters, ambulance tours with EMTs and EMS demonstrations. Service dogs are welcome, and encouraged, to familiarize them with ambulances.

The cost is $15 per meal, which includes one pizza (cheese or pepperoni), salad bar and two soft drinks. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at vistafd.org

September 11 remembered

Activities and ceremonies took place this week to remember those lost in the Sept. 11 terror attacks, and to recognize first responders, including at schools and fire departments.

On Sunday, the Vista Fire Department held a wreath-laying ceremony at the department’s 9/11 monument. On Wednesday, some 75 people gathered at the Pound Ridge Fire Department to pay respects to those who died, including civilians, military members and first responders who rushed into the burning buildings and did not  return home. Speakers also recognized the additional deaths caused in the months and years afterwards — still ongoing — by the rescue and recovery conditions at ground zero.

Among those participating were local, county and state officials, and religious leaders. Lily Vollen, a Pound Ridge seventh-grader, read a poem she composed about Sept. 11, titled “Broken Mirrors.”

Pound Ridge Fire Department's September 11 memorial service was attended by religious leaders, government official and featured an original poetry reading by 7th grader Lily Vollen.
